What Is a Hammertoe?
A hammertoe is a foot deformity where one of the smaller toes bends downward at the middle joint, creating a hammer-like appearance. This condition is typically caused by a muscle and tendon imbalance that puts pressure on the toe joints, gradually forcing the toe into an abnormal position.
In its early stages, a hammertoe may be flexible and respond to conservative treatment. However, over time, it can become rigid and more painful, making it difficult to walk or wear shoes comfortably. Corns, calluses, and inflammation often develop as the bent toe rubs against footwear.
Hammertoes can affect anyone but are more common in individuals who frequently wear tight shoes or high heels, have a family history of foot deformities, or suffer from arthritis. If left untreated, the condition can worsen, leading to long-term discomfort and limited mobility.

Common Causes of Hammertoes
Hammertoes often result from muscle imbalance or added pressure on the toes due to:
- Wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes (especially high heels)
- Genetics or inherited foot structure
- Trauma or injury to the toe
- Arthritis or other joint disorders
Symptoms to Watch For
If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may have a hammertoe:
- A visible bend in the toe joint
- Pain or discomfort while wearing shoes
- Corns or calluses on the top of the toe
- Inflammation, redness, or burning sensation
- Reduced flexibility or range of motion in the toe
Treatment Options for Hammertoes
There are both non-surgical and surgical options to treat hammertoes, depending on severity.
Conservative Treatments
- Wearing roomier shoes with soft soles
- Custom orthotics or toe pads
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications
Surgical Treatments
If the hammertoe is rigid or causes significant pain, surgery may be necessary. Common hammertoe surgery types include:

What to Expect During Recovery
Hammertoe surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Recovery times vary depending on the procedure but generally include:
- Wearing a surgical shoe or boot for 2–6 weeks
- Limiting physical activity and keeping the foot elevated
- Pain management and wound care instructions
- Physical therapy or toe exercises post-surgery
