Ankle ligaments: what are they? ankle ligaments are bands of tissue that connect bones to other bones. There are several different ankle ligaments, including the anterior talofibular ligament, posterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, and deltoid ligament. Each ankle ligament has a specific function in stabilizing the ankle joint. In this article, we will discuss the functions of each ankle ligament and how they can be injured.

Ankle Ligaments Functions and Injury

TIBIOCALCANEAL LIGMENT

The talocalcaneal ligament is the strongest ankle ligament. It connects the tibia (shinbone) to the calcaneus (heel bone).

The function of this ankle ligament is to:

  • Stabilizes the ankle joint
  • Prevents the foot from too overextending.

Talocalcaneal ligament injuries are often caused by falls or direct blows to the ankle. It occurs when the ankle is twisted forcefully and by a sudden twisting motion of the ankle or a direct blow to the ankle.

Symptoms of a talocalcaneal ligament injury include pain and swelling in the ankle.

ANTERIOR TALOFIBULAR LIGAMENT

The anterior talofibular ligament is the ankle ligament that is most commonly injured. This ligament attaches the bone in the ankle (talus) to the fibula, which is the smaller of the two bones in the lower leg.

The main function of this ligament is to:

  • Stabilize the ankle joint, and;
  • Prevent excessive inward movement (inversion) of the ankle

An injury to this ligament can occur when the ankle is turned inward (forcefully inversion injury) or when there is a direct blow to the outside of the ankle. This can occur during a fall or when landing on an uneven surface.

Symptoms of an anterior talofibular ligament injury include:

  1. Pain, and;
  2. Swelling on the outside of the ankle.

POSTERIOR TALOFIBULAR LIGAMENT

The posterior talofibular ligament attaches the ankle bone (talus) to the fibula and is located on the back of the ankle.

This ligament’s main function is to:

  • Stabilize the ankle joint, and;
  • Prevent too much backward movement of the ankle.

An injury to this ligament can occur when the ankle is turned outward (eversion injury) or when there is a direct blow to the inside of the ankle.

Symptoms of a posterior talofibular ligament injury include:

  1. Pain and;
  2. Swelling on the inside of the ankle.

CALCANEOFIBULAR LIGAMENT

The calcaneofibular ligament attaches the fibula (the smaller bone on the outside of the ankle) to the calcaneus (the heel bone).

This ligament’s main function is to:

  • Stabilize the ankle joint and;
  • Prevent too much from turning inward movement of the ankle

An injury to this ligament can occur when the ankle is turned inward (inversion injury) or when there is a direct blow to the outside of the ankle.

Symptoms of a calcaneofibular ligament injury include pain and swelling on the outside of the ankle.

DELTOID LIGAMENT

The deltoid ligament is a broad, flat ligament that is located on the inside of the ankle and attaches the talus to the medial malleolus (the bony prominence on the inside of the ankle).

This ligament’s main function is to:

  • Stabilize the ankle joint
  • Prevent too much from rolling outward movement of the ankle

An injury to this ligament can occur when the ankle is turned outward (eversion injury) or when there is a direct blow to the inside of the ankle.

Symptoms of a deltoid ligament injury include pain and swelling on the inside of the ankle.

Ankle Ligament Injuries

Ankle ligament injuries are common in both athletes and non-athletes. These types of injuries can occur when the ankle is twisted or turned in an awkward position, or when there is a direct blow to the ankle.

Symptoms of an ankle ligament injury include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling, and;
  • Bruising

If you suspect that you have injured your ankle ligament, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Ankle ligament injuries can be treated with a variety of methods, including

  • Rest
  • Ice,
  • And elevation (RICE)
  • Ankle bracing, and;
  • Physical therapy
